Recent Beauty Faves: Micellar Water & Frownies

One of my greatest interests outside of the fashion world is beauty and skincare.  Every month, you can usually find my nose buried in the latest issue of Allure magazine.  I love scouring the pages for the latest and greatest products and dermatological advances.

So when Bioderma, a French pharmaceutical company, which specializes in the treatment of sensitive skin and other dermatological conditions, reached out to me about their micellar water, I was so excited.  I’ve heard the recent buzz about the unique benefits of makeup removal from this formula, which actually dates back to 1913.  The formula is comprised of micelles, which are tiny oil molecules suspended in water.  Micelles are attracted to dirt, makeup, and oil, and they draw out impurities without drying out your skin.  The solution differs from typical face washes in that rather than containing a foamy solution that strips your skin of moisture, micelles cling on to the dirt and makeup on your skin and dissolve them while leaving behind a glowy, hydrated finish.

My experience with the Bioderma Micellar Water is extremely positive.  My favorite products are the Hydrabio micellar water for dry and dehydrated skin and the Hydrabio serum for dehyrated skin.  The serum is super hydrating, doesn’t break me out, or feel sticky or heavy.  While I prefer a two-step cleaning technique — makeup remover and face wash — the micellar water is an excellent cost effective alternative to makeup removal cloths.  The micellar water removed my hard to remove mascara like a dream!

Another product I’m excited to review is Frownies, an anti-wrinkle topical patch.  These patches are applied to the forehead between the eyes (the glabella), as well as the crows feet (corners of the eyes), and around the mouth to gently re-educate the underlying muscles to assume their correct, relaxed, and natural appearance.  As a person who is normally concentrating for most of the day, I’m prone to the 11s — the vertical forehead lines between the brows, which are also referred to as the glabella area.

These patches are activated using the rose water spray and applied directly to the treatment area.  It’s advised to keep the patches on overnight or a minimum of 3 hours to relax and retrain the muscles.  Having used the patches approximately three times weekly for the past month, I have noticed a softening of my 11-lines.  I tried using them on my crow’s feet, but I found the patches to be rough on my delicate under-eye area.  In terms of a non-pharmacological treatment for forehead and glabella lines, I found Frownies to be an excellent treatment option.

Figs Scrubs Review

FIGS Catarina one pocket scrub top c/o in deep royal blue – sized up  //  FIGS Livingston scrub pants c/o in deep royal blue – fit is TTS  //  Dansko Sonja clogs in Espresso Oiled – fit is TTS

Chances are if you work in the medical field, you know how difficult it is to find a great fitting set of scrubs.  The unisex cotton, scratchy, and often faded and mismatched brand the hospital provides are just not glamorous.  Factor in a 12 hour overnight shift in uncomfortable “pajamas”, and you’re practically dreaming about changing into the real deal come the morning.

When FIGS, an online retailer supplying high quality, tailored medical apparel, reached out to me, I had no idea that comfortable scrubs existed.  As I researched the brand, I discovered that the brand was created by a fellow Heather and inspired by the founder’s friend — a nurse practitioner.  FIGS is specifically designed with the hardworking medical professional in mind.  Their technical designs are made with antimicrobial, wrinkle resistant, and durable fabrics that are also supremely soft, lightweight, and breathable.

In terms of sizing, the scrubs are definitely more fitted than the traditional unisex style provided by the hospital.  They are super soft and stretchy.  I found that I needed to size up in the top for a roomier fit.  The pants are sooo comfortable!  The fit is inspired by yoga pants and features a wide yoga waistband with contrasting draw-cord.  The fit is true to size and the perfect length for me — I’m 5’4″ for reference.  I absolutely love these pants, and I don’t think I could rave enough about them!  The color is rich and vibrant, and the scrub set washes beautifully.  There’s barely any need for ironing.  They’re truly wash and go!
